SHARPTON, Rev. Larry Joe of Montgomery, Alabama, passed quietly at his home on February 26, 2026, surrounded by the peace and comfort he so often brought to others throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Clarence Talmadge Sharpton and Barbara Lucille Gilbert Sharpton, and by his cherished son, Sean Matthew Sharpton.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Patricia Ann Cagle Sharpton. Larry and Pat met and married in 1967, beginning a beautiful partnership built on faith, friendship, laughter, and unwavering love. Together they created a home filled with warmth, hospitality, and steadfast devotion to family and community.
He is also survived by his loving daughter, Mary Melissa Gilmore (Chap); his son, Neil Talmadge Sharpton (Rachel); and his most treasured grandchildren, Aaron Hunter Sharpton, Emma Grace Sharpton, and Charlotte Rhodes Sharpton, who brought him immeasurable pride and joy
A graduate of the University of Alabama and enthusiastic fan of all Alabama Crimson Tide sports, Larry was a lifelong learner with a creative and nurturing spirit. He was a master gardener whose hands coaxed beauty from the soil and whose gardens reflected his patience and gentle care. Self-taught as a painter and artist, he found joy in capturing the world’s quiet wonders on canvas, sharing his talent generously with those around him.
For more than 30 years, Larry faithfully served as an Episcopal priest, answering his calling with humility and compassion. He ministered not only from the pulpit but through everyday acts of kindness, offering guidance, comfort, and steadfast presence to countless parishioners, friends, and neighbors. His faith was not merely spoken—it was lived.
Above all, Larry loved his family and friends deeply. He was a steady presence, a listening ear, and a source of wisdom and encouragement. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the faith he strengthened, the gardens he planted, and the love he so freely gave.
He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his creative heart, and his enduring devotion to God and family. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and he will be profoundly missed.
Services will be held on Saturday March 7, 2026 at Holy Comforter in Montgomery, AL. Visitation will be held at 10 am with the service to follow at 11.
